Grimes - Vanessa

Grime's debut album and second work were both released in 2010 on Arbutus Records. In January it was then announced that Claire Boucher had signed to the renowned cult label 4AD.

From then on, it was clear that the 24-year-old had more to offer, as it is easy to jump to the conclusion that this delicate voice cannot be a high-flyer. Grimes is to be understood as a total work of art who, in addition to her music, also produces music (art) videos and is not averse to extraversion in her style of dress, which has already spread in the fashion world. The Canadian moves musically between New Age, Glitch, K-Pop and Industrial and proves impressively that it is not easy to walk a tightrope between these genres.

Update: Grimes and Elon Musk – an unconventional duo that has made headlines since their relationship began in 2018. The experimental pop artist and the tech entrepreneur quickly bonded over their shared love of technology, art, and futuristic ideas. Together, they have three children – including the famously named X Æ A-12. Their relationship, like their personalities, defies the norm, often shaped by distance, media buzz, and philosophical musings.

Thomas Dolby - funny video interview from the 80's!

Thomas Dolby was born in 1958 in Hammersmith, UK, and earned his nickname “Dolby” through his passion for electronic music and synthesizers — a name he eventually adopted as his stage name.

Contrary to popular belief, he has no relation to the Dolby family behind the famous noise reduction technology. In fact, his father was an archaeologist. At the age of 18, Thomas built his first synthesizer and, by the late 1970s, was working as a sound engineer for various bands, including Camera Club (featuring Trevor Horn). Inspired by Kraftwerk and Brian Eno, he was always at the forefront of innovative music technology. In 1983, Dolby broke into the U.S. Top 5 with his quirky hit "She Blinded Me with Science", featuring voice samples by the eccentric British scientist Magnus Pyke. By the late '80s, Thomas Dolby shifted his focus: he composed film scores, worked as a producer, and started developing music-related hardware and software. In 1993, he founded the software company Headspace, based in San Mateo, California. Its first product was the Virtual String Quartet. In 1996, Headspace was renamed Beatnik Inc., focusing on developing audio formats and composition tools for mobile phone ringtones. A fun detail in the video below: the host is dressed in full Kraftwerk gear, just like on the cover of “The Man-Machine” album!

Chromatics - INTO THE BLACK

Formed as a No (New!?) Wave quartet in Seattle in the still new millennium, the sound of the now four-piece Chromatics changed when they moved to Portland, Oregon.

Unfortunately, the Chromatics subsequently disintegrated into numerous other projects (including Shoplifting) until only Adam Miller remained from the original formation. After a few line-up changes, guitarist Miller, singer Ruth Radelet, drummer Nat Walker and producer/multi-instrumentalist Johnny Jewel finally form the band. For the release of their third album, they switched from Gold Standard Laboratories to the small label Italians Do Better. In 2007, “Night Drive” describes a radical change from earlier post-punk to dark disco. The four won many new friends. In 2011, the increasingly soundtrack-like Chromatics set further exclamation marks with a contribution to the Ryan Gosling film hype “Drive”. They continue to live out their ethereal, noir-lacquered cinematic style between Giorgio Moroder, New Order and M83. Current album: “Kill For Love”

Update: In August 2021, members Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, and Nat Walker announced the band's dissolution. Producer Johnny Jewel, instrumental in shaping the group's sound, was notably absent from the statement. The long-anticipated album Dear Tommy, announced in 2014, remains unreleased and is surrounded by numerous myths. :-(

Following the split, former members have pursued solo musical endeavors. Ruth Radelet released solo singles like “Crimes” and a cover of Elliott Smith’s “Twilight”. Adam Miller released his solo album Gateway in 2022. Johnny Jewel continues to be active as a producer and label owner.

Lee (scratch) Perry

Disco Devil " was created in 1976 when Lee Parry was no longer an active producer of Bob Marley. The Wailers, the band of Bob Marley, whose long existence is mainly due to Bob, was reshuffled several times, but found from 1972 two important new members Aston Barrett and Carlton Barrett on bass and drums, who previously played in the studio band "The Upsetters" of Lee "Scratch" Perry.

The Upsetters was the real secret weapon of Perry, because early he recognized that good songs also have to do with solid music, especially if you want to technically alienate the arrangements. The genre "Dub" was probably invented by Lee, which brought him the appendage "Scratch" Perry. His specialty was to enrich sounds and musical passages with external equipment, sometimes several times with effects, called "overdubbing" in the jargon, which was very exotic at the time, especially since his style was very popular in the THC faction and still is! So Perry is also considered a pioneer of remixes and collaborations with DJs. Disco Devil as an 8 minute version was understood as an attempt to assert itself on the increasingly hip disco dance floors and accordingly to bring in some money next to the original by Max Romeo. Nowadays the techniques used for this purpose are used by many music producers, especially in the field of electronic music. By the way - Lee "Scratch" Perry lives in Switzerland these days and married Mireille, a dominant businesswoman who made headlines in the 80s. Lee Perry extroverted clothing style was already striking in the 70s and is even more so today!!! An aged bird of paradise, who must have seen many shades of color outside the "normal-perceptible" in his life, still acts very very youthful today. Lee Perry's creativity remains unbroken to this day. In 2003, he won the Grammy in the category of Best Reggae Album with his album Jamaican E. T..

Update: With the passing of Lee "Scratch" Perry in 2021, the music world lost one of its most colorful and creative pioneers. Despite his eccentric style, he was globally admired as a wizard of sound. Perry may be gone, but his influence will echo for generations. R.I.P. Lee "Scratch" Perry.

Wuf Ticket - The Key (South Bronx 1980)

Impressive video from the birth of graffiti, electro, hip hop and lots of Kojak cars, burning house ruins and sprayed subway cars! It gets really cool from min. 3.59 when Wuf Ticket - The Key kicks in!

The South Bronx was originally an agricultural area, founded by the Dutch colony in the 17th century with the name of a Swedish farmer “Bronck”. Around 1900, many Italians, Irish, Jews and Germans lived in the Bronx and formed a middle class, but they increasingly left the borough after the World War, creating a working class and poor neighborhood, which unfortunately resulted in a lot of gang crime, car theft, drugs and robberies in the south. In 1977, the Bronx was in flames, causing around 40 percent of the buildings to burn down by 1980. Because homeowners could no longer sell their properties, they set them on fire in order to receive some compensation from the insurance companies. From 1990 onwards, crime fell massively and the Bronx is now known as the dormitory city for Manhattan, as there are only around 300,000 jobs for every 1.3 million inhabitants. The real estate industry quickly renamed the area SoBro and has been marketing it to established professionals and artists for some time now. Has gentrification now begun?
